Tour du Mont Blanc on an E-Bike

Every summer since 2018, Verbier has been the scene of an E-Bike festival. During this festival, an ambitious professional E-Bike race takes place: the Tour du Mont-Blanc in 3 days. In teams of two, some twenty teams in the men's and women's categories will race around Mont Blanc on E-Bikes.

The Tour du Mont Blanc by E-Bike is 100km, 3000m of ascent and 5000m of descent, 4 batteries per day, narrow and demanding mountain bike trails, all divided into 2 special stages. The Swiss Mountain Bike School participated as a "deflag" collaborator. Auguste was the one who had to remove the markers used to mark the route throughout the race. He was able to discover the race from the inside and at the same time discover new trails in neighbouring regions.

The route of this race is quite incredible. From Verbier, the runners head downhill to Lourtier. From there they head to Orsières and then slowly into the Val Ferret. The Val Ferret is simply beautiful and offers some incredible E-bike routes. If you are an experienced rider, you can take the e-race pro route.

At the end of the Val Ferret, the riders embark on a final climb, in a wild and grandiose alpine setting. Having reached the objective of the Grand Col Ferret, the Italian side of the Val Ferret opens up before our eyes for a spectacle that exceeds all expectations. The valley seems very wild and unspoilt. The riders then set off for a final downhill sprint to Courmayeur: this is the end of the first day, rewarded with a pizza e una birra!

After a restful night in the hotel, the deflag team has to catch up with the riders who left at dawn. The day starts with a steep climb to the French-Italian border. There we are below the Petite Aiguille des Glaciers which culminates at 3464 meters. It's like being lost in the middle of nowhere and it's quite pleasant. We start a nice descent to France, long and easy until "Les Chapieux", a new little lost paradise. The stage ends a little further on, between the Rochers des Enclaves and the Rocher du Vent, on the edge of a lake.

After a quick dip, a change of batteries and a good refreshment, we start a beautiful climb at the edge of the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve. Arrived at the Col du Joly, we take a sloping route with a splendid view on the Mont Blanc. That's it, we recognize the world of Chamonix and its legendary needles. To think that we were in Verbier yesterday! The feeling is superb. We start a very steep descent to Contamines.

We go up one last time before descending to Les Houches. The second day is over.

For the third and final day, the route joins Champex-Lac from the pass... for a traverse followed by a descent on a path with large rolling rocks that is very demanding. Then the descent to Champex-Lac through pine trees and orange soil has a very good flow, we have fun and get our strength back before attacking the last climb to the Tête de la Payanne, the Mont Brûlé and finally the Col de Mille. There is a lot of gas on this ridge! You have to be careful not to lose your balance and get distracted by the incredible scenery.

From the Col de Mille we take the downhill mountain bike route to Montagnier (the most beautiful descent of the tour, thanks to the local team that maintains the hiking and mountain bike trails). Last climb before arriving in Verbier.

A magnificent tour, with beautiful and demanding climbs, superb descents and a great feeling of accomplishment: we have done the tour of Mont Blanc!
